– As a Defensive Shooting Instructor, you learn quickly that while you don't get to pick what gun all of your students have, you do have a responsibility to train them as well as possible and give them the best advice you can.
Now this type of firearm, designed to shoot both centerfire traditional lead rounds and shotgun rounds; the Judge, or others like it, is designed specificallyto give more versatility to the person who owns this gun, but it comes with some things that you really have to know about.
One of them is that the ammunition you put in this gun can really affect performance pretty dramatically.
Now, luckily, not only a Firearms Instructor has responded to this firearm and said, "We're gonna teach youhow to use it properly.
" Ammunition manufacturerslike Winchester have also come up with specialty rounds designed specifically for this type of firearm.
Now, what's important to understand is that this is a rifledbarrel revolver.
This is not a short barrel shotgun.
Now, if you put a traditional shotgun pellet round inside of this revolver, what's gonna happen is those pellets are gonna hit that rifling and be spun to theoutside of the pattern.
So if you think about patterning a shotgun, now you're gonna have a big hole in the middle of it, right where you're aiming this revolver.
So, again, ammunition manufacturers have responded and that's where the Winchester 410 Defender Round comes in, with its Defense Discs.
Now, the Defense Discs are specifically designed to allow you to firethis round out of this, get the benefit of having pellets mixed in with these Discs, which actually grab the rifling, and are going to stay on target just like a traditionalpistol round would.
I'm going to go ahead and put my eye protection on.
And you can see we've setup a large patterning board, just like we would for a shotgun, and we're gonna fire one of these Defense Disc-loaded rounds out here and see what happens.
(gun fires) Let's go take a look.
(slow motion gun fires) (slow motion explosion) Now as you can see here, just above the center here, right in the area I was aiming, right where this red fiber optic was, that's where these three Discs are.
Now, if you came outhere with just some kind of a birdshot for a 10-round, all you would have are the pellets that are out here on the periphery of where I was aiming because again, that rifling's gonna spin them out.
But when you have one of these purpose-made, Defensive Rounds for your 410 Revolver, that features these centered slugs that are gonna grab that rifling, that's exactly what you're going to get.
You're gonna get the effectiveness that you're looking for out of this as yourDefensive Firearm choice with the added benefit of the pellets which do give you more leeway in a controlled situation, but don't leave you with this big hole in the middlethat's not gonna be filled by the Purpose-DesignedDefensive Round.
If you choose to use this firearm, also keep in mind I wasonly about 20 feet away, and we already see how wide this pattern is.
So this is a very specific type of firearm.
Choose it, use it, but makesure that you're loading it well and using it in an appropriate situation.
